1997 Pirate Football: Out With a Bang!

“OUT WITH A BANG”
by Coach Steve Lyga

High expectations surround us, another championship is our goal,
With a whole chorus of starters back, we’re picked to lead the polls.

We started the season at Indee, a team that is always a thorn in our side,
We came “to their sandbox and broke all the toys”, our faces beaming with pride.

A hard fought battle by both teams, but as the scoreboard did reveal,
A twenty to six victory for the Pirates; Are the Pirates for real?

Week number two brought the G-E-T Redmen to town,
An up and coming football program, made our faces frown.

The overconfident Pirates literally gave the ball game away,
With a total of ten fumbles, one in overtime, I didn’t know what to say.

The better football team had certainly lost this test,
Could we get it back together? Could we beat the rest?

The schedule seemed to be against us, as the best teams we would play first,
The turnovers just kept coming, as in Melrose-Mindoro we played our worst.

Four turnovers again would seal our fate, as the Mustangs scored on each,
The defense would shine in the second half, but still the game was out of reach.

The next week brought us the Norsemen, another team of experience and speed,
Three big plays and the contest was done, but this loss wouldn’t make us concede.

We saw some bright spots, in the way we performed that night,
We knew we were maturing, we needed to work harder to get it right.

With three straight losses, our self-confidence could have been contested,
In a non-conference game against River Ridge, our theories again were tested.

A team of size and talent, with whom we weren’t supposed to compete.
Brought back the confidence in ourselves, the non-conference win, a “Treat”.

The same night of the River Ridge game, revealed another victory as you know,
The Lincoln forfeit came through for us,”two wins” this weekend would show.

The Wildcats of Blair-Taylor were next in line for our season’s unraveling fate,
We marched up and down the field scoring 41 points, the line was playing great.

The homecoming game against Alma-Gilmanton proved to be exciting for all,
Mistakes again would haunt us before the half, but the Pirates answered the call.

Being down to one-win Alma-Gilmanton, by a thirteen to sixteen score.
Gave Beuf and Slick the halftime talk, and we came out for more.

A second half of determination, our focus back on track,
Put the Rivermen back in place, and our comeback streak in tact.

Next up for the Pirates, were the winless Cardinals of Eleva-Strum,
An early touchdown and concussion, were signs of things to come.

On the first defensive series, Ressie came up with a big hit,
The next play on offense that Kory called, he couldn’t remember it.

A few minutes later on the sidelines, we asked if he knew what we were saying,
Kory responded in a dazed look, Who the hell are we playing?

We put it together and finished the game with Jesse Cyrus at the reigns,
A 26 to 13 victory would keep our streak sustained.

Michael Z. came through with big runs, 170 yards on the day.
He won the area rushing title, a “team” accomplishment, Mike would say.

Our 5 and 2 conference finish was third, certainly not what we had sought.
But our season finished strong, and our play-off dreams were caught.

Our first opponent would be North Crawford, a team with 8 wins and one defeat,
They averaged 50 points a game, could the Pirates realy compete?

This team of Pirates made some history, at North Crawford that night,
The scoreboard read 37-6 at half time, what an unbelievable sight.

Michael Ziegler went down early, after helping to spot us a lead,
Giving way for Cary and Adam, and others to succeed.

Adam found his “Big Gear”, running like a man possessed,
Cary flew like the wind, the line was playing their best.

Our first football play-off win in our school’s history,
Will stand out forever in the team, the fans, and me.

A forty-nine to twenty-six victory, with the whole team taking part,
Seemed to be an omen, the second season had it’s start.

Our next test was Southwestern, a team of power and size,
B.J. and Mike weren’t at full strength, Yet victory was in our eyes.

Two goal line stands in the 1st quarter, the defense had done it’s chore,
The offense had met it’s match, but led by a 7 to 6 score.

The second half started much the same, the defenses both played hard,
A battle of wits right to the end, and ours somehow got scarred.

Leading the game 14 to 6, then later in the game by three,
The roof fell in on our winning streak, as all could surely see.

The final score was not indicative, of how close the game was really played,
But we’re all proud of these Pirates, and the price they paid.

They took their play to the next level, and found what it’s all about,
To be successful outside of our conference, there was never a doubt.

A seven and four season felt pretty good, after our dismal start,
We grew as friends and partners, we felt it in our heart.

I’d like to end by telling the parents and fans, Jesse, and the whole football gang,
We accomplished more than just wins on the field, We came “OUT WITH A BANG”.
